The Gambia 10 Dalasis Coin Struck in Commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of Independence.
The Gambia lies on the west coast of Africa between latitudes 13 degrees and 14 degrees north of the equator. The country's total area, land and water, is just over 4000 square miles and its principal geographical feature is the River Gambia, a fine waterway which winds through the country for over 200 miles, and which is navigable by ocean going vessels of up to 3000 tons for 150 miles from the coast to Kuntaur.
The capital and major sea port of the country is Banjul, near the mouth of the River Gambia, and like the rest of the country enjoys a sub-tropical climate with distinct dry and rainy seasons in November-May and June-October respectively. Agriculture is the country's main industry and groundnuts the main crop.
There is also a growing tourist industry.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the country's independence, the Royal Mint has been commissioned by the Central Bank of Gambia to strike a commemorative 10 dalasis coin.
It has a diameter of 38.6 mm and a weight of 28.28 grammes. This case contains one of the proof edition in sterling silver which is limited to a maximum of 20000 pieces.
The obverse design is a portrait, by Michael Rizello, of the President of The Gambia, His excellency Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara.
The Reverse design shows the national coat of arms.
